Twenty pumpkins for both October and November: carved faces, plain field pumpkins, a wheelbarrow load and a patch with a fence. The ribs give each one a natural set of sections to color.
A pumpkin has ribs, and ribs are free sections. That is why this subject works for children who are not ready to invent their own areas yet: the shape tells them where one colour stops. Twenty designs cover both months these get printed. Carved faces (2, 14) for October, plain field pumpkins and the harvest wagon end (3, 7, 20) for November, and a cut-open pumpkin showing seeds (17) for the science lesson in between.
Ways to use these
- Orange is not compulsory. White, green and pale yellow pumpkins are all real. Pointing that out before the crayons come out usually gets a more interesting sheet back.
- Rib by rib. On designs 1, 5 and 12, colour each rib section a slightly different shade of the same colour. It is the simplest introduction to shading that does not require any actual shading technique.
- Two seasons, one print run. Designs 2, 14 and 19 read as Halloween. Designs 3, 6, 7, 13 and 20 read as autumn harvest. Print the whole set once and use it across both.
Every design downloads as a US Letter PDF that also scales cleanly to A4 with “Fit to printable area”. Print in grayscale, there is no color in the files. Frequently asked questions
Are the carved ones scary?
No. Design 2 is a triangle-eyed grin and design 19 is a scarecrow with a pumpkin head and a straw hat. Both are friendly rather than frightening.
Which page shows the inside of a pumpkin?
Design 17, cut in half with the seeds and fibres drawn in. It is the one teachers ask for when the class has just scooped a real one out.
Is there a simple one for a two or three year old?
Design 1. One outline, a stalk, one leaf, and nothing else on the page.
Can I print these on orange paper?
You can, and designs 1, 5 and 12 look good that way, but check the print is set to black and white first or the lines will come out muddy.
