Twenty mermaids and underwater scenes, with flowing hair, scaled tails, shells and seahorses. The scale patterns give the tails real texture to work on.
A mermaid page is really an underwater scene with a character in it, and the underwater part is what most sets skip. These carry the whole environment, coral formations, shells, tropical fish, a seahorse, an octopus with eight curling arms, so there is something left to color once the tail is done.
Ways to use these
- Scales one at a time. The tail study (11) is drawn as individual scales rather than a hatched texture. Slow, absorbing and the best looking result on the page.
- Blues and greens only. A limited underwater palette makes these look coherent. Then let one thing, usually the hair, break the rule.
- Pairs with the butterfly set. Both reward patience at about the same level. If a child finished a butterfly page happily, these are the natural next step.
Every design downloads as a US Letter PDF that also scales cleanly to A4 with “Fit to printable area”. Print in grayscale, there is no color in the files. Are these based on a film character?
No. All original artwork. We do not publish pages based on films or branded characters, which is also why nobody here has a name.
What else is in the set besides mermaids?
Six of the twenty have no mermaid in them at all: a seahorse (6), a castle in seaweed (8), an open treasure chest (13), a coral cluster with shells (15), an octopus (18) and a jellyfish (20).
How difficult are these?
The upper end of the site for children, mainly because of the scales and the coral. Six and up, or younger with help on the small areas.
