A heart is the first symbol most children can draw from memory, which makes it the right shape for practising everything else. This set runs the full range: design 1 is a single plain outline with a thick edge, and design 2 is a mandala with concentric rings of pattern inside it. Design 20 leaves the middle deliberately empty for a name. Twenty pages that are useful in February and still useful in June.
Ways to use these
- A difficulty ladder in one set. Go 1, then 13, then 4, then 19, then 2. Each step adds internal lines without changing the shape, so progress is visible on the fridge.
- Get well and thank you cards. Design 20 has a blank centre band. Coloured round the edge with a message written in the middle, it covers most of the reasons a child needs to give someone a card.
- Pattern practice. Designs 4, 13 and 19 are the same heart divided into zigzags, checks and stripes. They are the cheapest way to teach that a repeated mark reads as texture.
Every design downloads as a US Letter PDF that also scales cleanly to A4 with “Fit to printable area”. Print in grayscale, there is no color in the files. Which is best for a very young child?
Design 1. One large outline, a thick line to aim at, and nothing inside it to work around.
Is there an adult level page here?
Design 2, the heart mandala. Concentric rings of small repeated shapes, and the most demanding page in the set by a wide margin.
Can these be used outside Valentine Day?
Yes, and most of them read as neutral. Design 16 has a stem and leaves so it looks like fruit, and designs 2, 7 and 17 are pattern exercises that carry no seasonal reading at all.
Which one has room for writing?
Design 20. The centre is a wide blank band sized for a short message or a name.
